The effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation have long been a subject for debate. The technological developments of the last twenty years such as cell and cordless phones, wireless communications, monitors and even high voltage lines have all been studied as potential risk factors for cancer and other diseases. Less known to the public, but still a matter of some extensive research, is the study of the effect of microwave radiation especially on the visual system and especially on the lens of the eye.

The basic motivation for this research came after WorldWar II when it was suspected that radar operators suffered a greater risk of developing cataracts (a condition characterized by clouding in the natural lens of the eye). These particular suspicions were to trigger the first guidelines for exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
A recent scientific study conducted by a team of researchers from Israel, found a possible link between microwave radiation, similar to the type found in cellular phones, and different kinds of damage to the visual system. At least one kind of damage seems to accumulate over time and not heal, challenging the common view and leading the researchers to the assertion that the duration of exposure is not less important than the intensity of the irradiation. The researchers also emphasized that existing exposure guidelines for microwave radiation might have to change.


Hot Ear

One well-understood effect of microwave radiation is dielectric heating. Many people who use a mobile or cordless phone experience the effects of this radiation by a sensation of heat on and around the ear which today is commonly called ‘Hot Ear’ in which any dielectric material (such as living tissue) is heated by rotations of polar molecules induced by the electromagnetic field. In the case of a person using a cell phone, most of the heating effect may occur in the head surface, causing its temperature to increase.


 
There is a great deal of debate today as to the long term effects on the body from the use of mobile and cordless phones. These concerns have been widely reported in the media over recent years and current research into this phenomena indicates that the electro-magnetic radiation created may be harmful to your health especially if you use a phone frequently or for long periods.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome

Many users of mobile handsets have reported feeling several unspecific symptoms during and after its use, such as burning and tingling sensations in the skin of the head and extremities, fatigue, sleep disturbances, dizziness, loss of mental attention, reaction times and memory retentiveness, headaches, malaise, tachycardia (heart palpitations) an disturbances of the digestive system. Some researchers, implying a causal relationship, have named this syndrome as a new diagnostic entity. The World Health Organization prefers to name it "idiopathic environmental intolerance", in order to avoid the implication of causation. This entity is quite controversial, because albeit identified in unmistaken terms by the patients who affirm to suffer from it, in some cases in such a radical way that they avoid using cellphones, it has not been recognized as a separate clinical entity by most medical researchers.
